Course Description:
Psychotherapists often find it difficult to resist the external and internal pressures to achieve symptomatic alleviation. Participants will discuss Freud’s evolution of thinking about the aims of psychoanalysis and improving symptoms. Attention will be given to what often occurs when the psychotherapist becomes symptom focused.

Educational Objectives:
• Describe the impact on the analytic process when the aim is symptom removal.
• List one aspect in the evolution of Freud’s thinking about the aim of psychoanalysis.
